The event will be held Saturday, May 15th 2010 and provides an outstanding way to enjoy the beauty and fun associated with fishing in the St. Mary's County area.

Entry fee is $150.00. 200-boat maximum entry. Entry fees are a charitable donation and are non refundable. St Marys County - Severe Weather Season

St. Mary’s County Department of Public Safety would like you to Be Aware and Be Prepared for severe weather during the upcoming spring season. St. Mary’s County is prone to a wide variety of natural hazards, including severe thunderstorms, flash flooding and tornados.

There are simple steps to take to help save lives and mitigate the effects from these severe weather hazards. First and foremost is to become educated with the terms which are used to warn the public of pending weather and the systems which deploy these warnings.

• A watch means that a severe thunderstorm, flash flood or tornado is possible in your area. You should monitor a NOAA Weather Radio or local radio and television news outlets for the latest developments.

• A warning is when a thunderstorm, flash flood or tornado is actually occurring, take shelter immediately.

CodeRED Weather Warning is an early telephone warning system designed to automatically deliver targeted weather notifications for the immediate threats of severe thunderstorms, flash floods and tornado warnings within moments of being issued by the National Weather Service. Weather Warning delivers a pre-recorded alert message via phone to citizens in St. Mary’s County who choose to sign up. The system sends these notifications 24 hours a day, 365 days a year providing the needed time to prepare for severe weather events. This becomes critical if a tornado comes through your area during the night, when television, radio broadcasts and sirens are less effective.

St. Marys County Government to remain closed Friday, Feb. 12, 2010

St. Marys County Government will remain closed for non-essential employees on Friday, Feb. 12. Emergency response staff will continue to clear snow and qualified inspectors will review the condition of each building before it is reoccupied.
While some roadways will continue to be hazardous with the heavy accumulations of snow and ice, State Highway, County Highways and private snow removal crews are working to clear all roadways.

The Loffler Building in Chancellors Run Park on Chancellors Run Road in Great Mills experienced a partial roof collapse on Feb. 10. It will remain closed until further notice. Seniors are encouraged to visit one of the other two Activity Centers for services and meals when they reopen on Tuesday, February 16.

Take Care of Your Tobacco Barn

Maintenance tips from farmers.

The roof is the most important part of your barn. Barn roofing is typically metal and needs to be painted periodically. Loose metal must be nailed to hold it firmly in place. Wind can get under a sheet of metal and bend it or blow it away.

Inspect the barn for signs of wood-boring insects. Treat immediately.

Replace siding when it deteriorates to keep the weather out of the barn.

Keep the doors in good condition and secure, especially on the north side, which receives the harshest weather.

Most barns have double doors over driveways with an overhead center bar for support—make sure all parts of the doors and the center bar are intact. If you have two sets of doors and one is bad, it is probably best to keep both sets open until they can be repaired. Do not let wind into the barn unless it can get out, or it can blow the barn down.

Keep vegetation away from the barn. Do not allow poison ivy or other vines to climb the siding. Do not allow trees to grow right next to the barn, and if seedlings appear, remove them when they are small. Existing trees growing up against the barn should be cut off at the ground. Their roots can be removed if they are not very large. Large trees will have large root systems, and grubbing them out could damage the barn. Consider spraying Roundup beneath sills once a year to keep vegetation down. Follow manufacturer’s instructions—it is useless to apply Roundup unless some foliage is present.

Inspect the sills and top plates for signs of rot or damage. Repair siding or roofing that may be exposing the frame to water or weather. Cut out rotted or damaged portions and replace with good wood. Inspect wood parts of the structure that directly contact the ground, such as ground-set posts that support sheds on the barn. Keep water from pooling around them. If the bases of the posts are deteriorated, cut out the bad wood and install concrete or stone piers to support the cut ends.

Paint may lengthen the life of siding, depending on the type of lumber. Virginia pine will last quite well without paint. Loblolly pine siding will not. Poplar siding may fare better when painted.

St Mary's County Held 2nd Small Business Roundtable At Lenny's Restaurant

Monday started with a great turnout at our 2nd Small Independent Business Roundtable at Lenny’s Restaurant. About 125 attended and heard about a wide variety of business resources available along with emerging ideas on how to raise local awareness of the many restaurants, construction trades, and other small business sectors throughout the County. We had businesses from Charlotte Hall to Scotland that employed one to 100. We heard from them, their concerns, challenges and opportunities. There is much work to do in 2010 to help the local economy.

This roundtable will be key to this effort. Many thanks if you attended the roundtable on Monday or our first one in November. The next one is scheduled for Monday, February 8, 2010 8:30 a.m.-10:00 a.m. at Lenny’s Restaurant. Please consider attending to learn, help, network, and be part of the roundtable.

Metcom Task Force to Hold Public Forum

Last year, the Maryland Legislature authorized a Task Force, comprised of St. Mary’s citizens, to review and study “the governance and structure” of the Metropolitan Commission (MetCom).

As part of this study the Task Force members would like to gather comments from the citizens of St. Mary’s County. MetCom was created by the Maryland Legislature in the 1950’s to supply public water and sewer services to St. Mary’s County.

Public Forum: Wed. January 27, 6:30pm to 8:00pm

County Governmental Center, Chesapeake Building, Leonardtown

The Task Force is asking members of the development, engineering, and surveying community as well as members of the building trades to attend this forum and provide comments concerning the Metropolitan Commission. Customers of MetCom also are encouraged to attend and offer comments. In case of inclement weather, the forum will have a rain date of Wed. February 10.

Citizens are also invited to send in written comments: The MetCom Task Force, c/o John Savich, County Administrator, St. Mary’s County Government, P.O. Box 653 Leonardtown MD 20650.
All comments given at this public forum and received by mail will assist the members of the task force as they make their recommendations in their Summer 2010 report.

There are ten task force members appointed by the St. Mary’s County legislators, the County Commissioners and the Metropolitan Commission. The co-chairs are Joseph Densford and MaryLynn Stone. Other members are F. Elliott Burch, Jr.; Ford Dean; Shelby P. Guazzo; Glen Ives; Robert Jarboe, Susan McNeill; James W. Spence, and Frank Taylor.

St Marys County Handles The Snow Storm

We had a pretty good snow storm roll thru St Mary’s this last weekend. The roads around the county had good snow removal resources in place. Between state and county road crews, all public roads received the attention they required and citizens were generally able to commute to their destinations at a reasonable rate.

The South County Business Association (SCBA) held a combination meeting and "Pot Luck" dinner at The View Lounge. Sharing of local business information and education is always an advantage to any buisiness and the SCBA December meeting proved to be a valuable resource for both. The evening was a big success and all of those who attended enjoyed the many choices of tasty dishes that were provided by members.

Piney Point Lighthouse Holiday Exhibit

The Piney Point Lighthouse Museum and Park will offer an exhibit that depicts five different periods in time. The museum and holiday exhibit will be open 12 noon to 4 p.m. on December 12, 13, 19, and 20 and daily from December 26 through January 3, 2010. Admission is $3 per adult, $2 for senior citizens and military personnel, $1.50 for children 6 to 18, and free for kids 5 and under. All are invited to the museum’s Christmas Open House on Sunday, December 13 from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free.

South County Business Association Has New Online Website

A new website for the South County Business Association has been published. The South County Business Association represents our business community located in the southern portion of St Mary's County.

The slogan for the South County Business Association is "Visit South County". Using this easy to remember slogan, the South County Business Association published a new website with the domain name of: http://www.visitsouthcounty.com/ which takes you to the association's blog.

The organization decided to use a blog in an effort to control cost, flexibility and all of the advantages afforded with the use of a social media site.

Although the site is new, it has a large amount of information in reference to available resources for southern Maryland.

Board Appoints Derick Berlage as Director, Land Use and Growth Management Department

The Board of County Commissioners for St. Mary’s County announces that Derick Berlage has been appointed as the Director for the County’s Department of Land Use and Growth Management, effective April 15.

Berlage has over 20 years of experience in land use and zoning issues in Maryland and served as Chairman of the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission. In that position he was Chief of the planning and parks functions for Montgomery County and served as Chairman of the County’s Planning Commission. His career includes service in the private sector as a senior real estate attorney, and additional public service as Chairman of the Montgomery County Council’s Land Use Committee and Chairman of the National Capital Transportation Planning Board.

He earned his Law Degree from the New York University School of Law and graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree from Princeton University. He is an active member of the American Planning Association and Urban Land Institute. “We are fortunate that Derick Berlage has agreed to lead this county department as we address important land use challenges and opportunities,” said Jack Russell, President, Board of County Commissioners for St. Mary’s County. Richard Hall, Secretary, Maryland Department of Planning, has worked with Berlage and added, “Derick Berlage is the right person for this job in St. Mary’s County. I have worked with him on the State’s Growth Task Force and he has been a great contributor; his experience will be very helpful as St. Mary’s County continues its efforts to manage growth and preserve its rural character.” The Land Use and Growth Management Department was created to enhance the quality of life for present and future generations through protection of the natural environment balanced with orderly growth, while ensuring our customers both guidance and effectiveness of the land use regulations. Home Access Center For St Mary's County Public Schools

Our St. Mary's County Public Schools have a web based application called Home Access Center (HAC). HAC is tightly intergrated with the Teacher Access Center; the new electronic gradebook system used by our teachers. It is designed to be easy to use and equally as easy to share information between teachers, school officials, and parents.

Welcome To St Mary's County Blog!

St Mary's County Blog is an easy place to locate items of interest to those of us in the southern Maryland area.

I have to be honest, when I was trying to think of a name for this blog that everyone would associate with St Marys County, it was hard. I realize that the name I ended up with appears to be an obvious choice. But, I had a ton of great names that I could choose from. Just think about all of the things that all of us in the southern part of the state take for granted that may have made fantastic names. One that I really like was "The Blinking Light". I know you are probably asking what does that have to do with southern Maryland, much less St Marys.

Here is the inspiration behind that name. If you head south in the state of Maryland and you want to go all the way down to Point Lookout State Park. You will have to go thru the southern most intersection of Md Route 5 and Md Route 235. Guess what you will see at that intersection? That's right, a blinking red light!

Although that would make a great name, I think the more appropriate name is simply St. Mary's County Blog.
